Fast Application
A Gel-X® set can be completed significantly faster than traditional acrylic or hard gel extensions.
Gel-X Nails Explained Simply
Gel-X® nails are currently one of the most popular methods for modern nail extensions. Many people ask: What exactly is Gel-X, how does it differ from regular gel, how long does it last, and is Gel-X gentler on the natural nail?
In this blog, we explain the key differences between traditional gel extensions and Aprés Gel-X®, show the advantages and disadvantages, explain durability, removal, refills, and why original Aprés Gel-X® tips are not comparable to cheap soft gel tips.
A pre-shaped soft gel tip system for fast, even and professional nail extensions. Perfect for everyday salon use as well as DIY gel nails at home!
Regular gel is built manually, which requires practice and a lot of time. Gel-X uses ready-made full cover tips made from real gel.
When applied correctly, Gel-X can last 4-5 weeks just like regular gel and can also be refilled. The system can fully compete with traditional gel nails and is even better for many users!
With classic gel nail extensions, the nail is sculpted using builder gel. The desired length is created using forms or plastic tips. Afterwards, the nail technician applies the gel layer by layer and manually shapes the curve, apex and final form.
After curing, the enhancement is extensively filed into its final shape. The result can be extremely durable and highly customizable, but it requires a lot of technical skill, experience and time.
Gel-X® is the world’s first patented full cover soft gel extension system and was developed by Aprés USA. Unlike traditional acrylic or hard gel enhancements, Gel-X® tips are not sculpted manually. Instead, fully pre-shaped gel tips are applied directly to the natural nail.
Gel-X® saves time, reduces filing and delivers consistent, professional results.
With regular gel, the nail is completely sculpted by hand. With Gel-X®, a matching full cover tip is selected, attached with Extend Gel and cured.
Original Aprés Gel-X® tips are made from real soft gel based on methacrylate. This creates a true gel-on-gel bond with the Extend Gel.
Gel-X® is significantly faster because the shape, length and structure are already built into the tip. Time-consuming sculpting and filing are minimized.
Gel-X® tips are industrially pre-shaped, making them especially even, thin, modern and clean-looking.
Both systems can last a long time. Traditional hard gel is often more durable under extreme stress, while Gel-X® stands out for comfort, flexibility and a more natural appearance.
Gel-X® can be soaked off with acetone and can also be refilled. This makes the method especially attractive for salons and clients looking for a gentler solution.
| Original Aprés Gel-X® | Cheap Soft Gel or Plastic Tips |
|---|---|
| Patented soft gel material based on methacrylate | Often made from ABS or PMMA plastic |
| True gel-on-gel bond | Only mechanical adhesion |
| Flexible and natural feel | Often rigid and prone to breaking |
| Easy to remove with acetone | More difficult to remove |
| Consistent quality and fit | Inconsistent quality |
| Ideal for professional salon results | Often higher risk of lifting |
Many cheap full cover tips are made from rigid plastic such as ABS or PMMA. Original Aprés Gel-X® tips are made from a special soft gel material based on methacrylate. This creates a stronger bond with Extend Gel, more flexibility and a more comfortable wearing experience.
Traditional gel is the classic, highly skilled method with maximum strength and fully customized sculpting. Gel-X® is the modern combination of a tip system, gel enhancement and soft gel technology. It is faster, easier to learn, visually very even and easier to remove.
Why Choose the Original?
A Gel-X® set can be completed significantly faster than traditional acrylic or hard gel extensions.
The tips are already pre-shaped, eliminating time-consuming sculpting.
The flexible soft gel material moves comfortably with the natural nail.
Gel-X® can be soaked off with acetone without aggressively filing down the natural nail.
The shape is even, elegant and optimized for professional salon results.
The system is easier to learn than traditional sculpting techniques.
Application
Push back the cuticles, remove excess cuticle and invisible cuticle, perform a manicure and gently buff the natural nail.
The tip should fully cover the natural nail without putting pressure on the sidewalls.
First apply the pH Bonder and then the Non Acid Gel Primer to the natural nail. Let both air dry. Apply enough liquid from the Gel-X - Tip Prep to the inside of the Gel-X® tip and massage it into the material. The surface becomes softer so the tip and gel can bond perfectly together.
Apply a thin layer of Extend Gel to the natural nail and place an appropriate amount inside the tip.
Place the tip at a 45-degree angle, slowly lower it onto the nail and avoid air bubbles. Use the Omni Light Lamp to flash cure the nail briefly so nothing moves. Repeat this with all fingers and then place the hand into a regular UV/LED lamp for a full cure.
After curing, the surface of the Gel-X tip can be softened again with Gel-X - Tip Prep or lightly buffed with a buffer. Important: Never use cleaner to remove filing dust during this step, as this can cause the tips to crack during daily wear. Finally, complete the nails with color, cover, top coat or nail art.
Refill or Removal?
Since original Aprés Gel-X® tips are made from methacrylates, they can be removed quickly and gently with acetone. But does it really make sense to do a completely new set every month, or is it better to refill the nails instead?
A complete new set every month can put stress on the natural nail over time. Not because of the gels, tips or the manual removal itself, but because the natural nail has to be fully prepped again with every new application.
This means the natural nail is buffed or roughened again each time. Especially at the nail tip, the natural nail can become slightly thinner month after month. Over time, this may lead to adhesion issues, lifting and more sensitive nails.
With a classic gel refill, the natural nail underneath the Gel-X® tip remains largely protected. Only the newly grown-out area is prepared and buffed. The rest of the natural nail can continue growing out without being repeatedly filed.
The Best Option:
If you do not want to give up the simplicity and benefits of Gel-X tips, but still want to protect the natural nail despite regular new sets, this is the perfect method for you:
After each month, remove approximately 90% of the enhancement using an e-file and file away the final 5% with a hand file. Leave a very thin layer of Extend Gel on the nails. Thin enough so it does not interfere with a new Gel-X application. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of Gel-X tips every month without damaging the natural nail.
Yes, absolutely. Since Gel-X® tips are made from real soft gel, new gel bonds perfectly to the existing material during a refill. This creates a strong and durable enhancement similar to a traditional gel refill.
A simple refill is usually faster, more affordable and requires less filing. However, there are situations where a complete removal followed by a new set may be the better option.
How many times have the nails already been refilled?
Has the original Gel-X® shape already grown out significantly?
Do you want to restore a perfect Gel-X® shape with a complete new set?
Is there a special natural nail shape, such as hooked or ski jump nails?
Would a removal and new set be faster and cleaner than excessive filing during a refill?
In many salons, it is common to do one refill after a Gel-X® new set and then perform a complete new set again at the third appointment. This keeps the shape looking even while also protecting the natural nail. However, this mainly works well on natural nails that grow out evenly without curving excessively.
We strongly advise against completely soaking off and rebuilding the enhancement with acetone at every appointment!
Instead, for salon work on clients and ideally also on your own nails, use the "best option" mentioned above.
There are two ways to remove Gel-X® tips: a slower acetone method for at-home use and a faster salon method using an e-file.
Lightly buff the top coat with a file so the acetone can penetrate more easily.
Soak a cotton pad or lint-free wipe with acetone and place it on the nail.
Wrap each finger individually with foil and leave it on for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Carefully push away the softened gel using an orangewood stick. If you are doing a new set immediately afterwards, avoid using nail care products.
Remove most of the material using an e-file. Leave around 10 to 20 percent on the nail so the natural nail is not touched.
Soak a cotton pad or lint-free wipe with acetone and place it on the nail.
Wrap each finger individually with foil and wait approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
Carefully push away the softened gel using an orangewood stick. If you are doing a new set immediately afterwards, avoid using nail care products.
Before choosing a shape, it is important to understand whether the Natural Line or Sculpted Line is better suited for the natural nail.
Flatter C-curve for flatter or wider nail beds. Ideal when the natural nail has less curvature and the tip should sit as naturally as possible.
Stronger C-curve and more apex for curved natural nails. Ideal when the nail has more height or a more sculpted look is desired.
Elegant, feminine and especially popular for modern salon nails.
Trendy shape with a straight tip, ideal for nail art.
Natural, practical for everyday wear and comfortable to wear.
Classic, clean and perfect for French looks.
Sharp, extravagant and ideal for statement nails.
When applied correctly, Gel-X® can last up to 4-5 weeks. Proper natural nail preparation, the correct tip size, full curing and avoiding air bubbles are essential for maximum retention.
When applied and removed correctly, Gel-X® is considered very gentle on natural nails. Damage usually happens from improper removal, excessive filing or poor nail preparation.
Yes. With the right products, a proper UV/LED lamp and some practice, Gel-X® is also suitable for ambitious DIY users. Clean application and proper nail preparation are extremely important.
Common reasons include poor natural nail preparation, oil or dust left on the nail, incorrect tip sizing, air bubbles under the tip or incomplete curing. Applying too much pressure while placing the tip can also create tension and later cause lifting.
You can prevent lifting by thoroughly removing invisible cuticle, lightly buffing the natural nail, choosing the correct tip size, avoiding air bubbles and fully curing the gel. The tip should sit tension-free and should never be too small.
Air bubbles usually occur when the tip is applied too quickly, at the wrong angle, with too little gel or if the tip shifts during flash curing. The tip should be slowly laid down from the cuticle area toward the free edge.
Special “Liquid Cover Gels” were developed specifically for this purpose. They offer excellent coverage and an optimized consistency to create a natural nude or cover look similar to a professionally sculpted gel nail. We recommend either the original Aprés Cover Gels or the JustNails Liquid Cover Gels.
Yes. After applying Gel-X® tips, you can reinforce them with builder gel or rubber base gel for extra strength. However, we do not recommend using acrylic or polygel, as these systems are often too rigid for flexible Gel-X® tips. We recommend the specially developed “APRÉS Builder Gelcoat” with item number AP-1BTGC15.
For Gel-X® nails you need suitable Gel-X® or soft gel tips, a compatible adhesive gel, primer or bonder, tip prep, a UV/LED lamp, nail file, buffer, manicure tools and optionally color gel or top coat.
The tip should fully cover the natural nail from sidewall to sidewall without applying pressure. If the tip is too small, tension and lifting can occur. If it is too large, it should be adjusted on the sides.
Yes. Gel-X® tips can be filled as long as the structure is still stable and there are no major liftings. During a refill, only the grown-out area is prepared and balanced with gel.
Depending on the system, Gel-X® can either be soaked off with acetone or carefully reduced with an e-file. Never rip the tips off, as this can damage the natural nail plate.
That depends on the desired result. Gel-X® is faster, lighter and feels more natural. Hard gel and acrylic are often more durable under extreme stress, but require more sculpting experience and filing. However, thousands of nail salons already use Gel-X® on clients and are extremely satisfied with its durability. More and more salons are switching entirely to Gel-X® for nail extensions.
Gel-X® is a patented full cover soft gel extension system developed by Aprés. Soft gel tips is the general term for flexible full cover tips. Original Aprés Gel-X® tips differ from cheaper alternatives through material quality, fit and overall system performance.
The best Gel-X® tips depend on the shape of the natural nail. Flatter nails often work best with Natural Tips, while more curved nails benefit from Sculpted Tips. A perfect fit, high-quality soft gel material and the correct length are key.
They are made from patented soft gel material that creates a true gel-on-gel bond. Many cheap soft gel tips are made from PMMA or even ABS plastic, making them less flexible, less durable and more prone to lifting.
